Andropause

What is Andropause?

By the time men are between the ages of 40 and 55, they can experience a phenomenon similar to the female menopause, called andropause.  Andropause, like menopause, is signaled by a drop in hormone levels.  The bodily changes occur very gradually in men and may be accompanied by changes in attitudes and moods, fatigue, a loss of energy, sex drive and physical agility.

Causes

Starting at about age 30, testosterone levels drop by about 10 percent each decade.  At the same time, another factor in the body, called Sex Binding Hormone Globulin, or SHBG, is increasing.  SHBG traps much of the testosterone that is still ciruculating and makes it unavailable to exert its effects in the body's tissues.  What's left over does the beneficial work and is known as "bioavailable" testosterone.

These symptoms can impact q
uality of life and may expose them to other, longer-term risks of low-testosterone. It is estimated that 30 percent of men in their 50s will have testosterone levels low enough to be causing symptoms or putting them at risk.

Impact of Low Testosterone

When there is less testosterone available to do its work, the testosterone target organ response decreases, bringing about many changes.   There is great variability in testosterone levels among healthy men so not all will experience the same changes to the same extent.  Unfortunately, with advancing age and declining testosterone levels, men, like women, seem to demonstrate a similar pattern of risk for osteoporosis. What's more, approximately one in eight men over age 50 actually have osteoporosis. Low bone density puts one at risk of frequent fractures, associated pain, and in many cases, loss of independence. Wrists, hips, spine and ribs are most commonly affected.

Natural Therapies for Andropause

There are several steps men can take in order to prevent or minimize these symptoms:

Reduce caffeine and sugar, carbonated drinks, high acid ash foods, and high protien diets because they leech calcium from the bones.

Reduce fried foods and refined carbohydrates which deplete the adrenals, add to andropausal weight gain, and drain male energy.

Don't eliminate fats completely, eat healthy fats such as seafood, cold-water fish and lean meets like turkey and chicken.  Also, consider flaxseed oil as a healthy oil to use in salad dressings or supplement with Krill Oil.

Increase intake of zinc with foods like liver, oysters, brewer's yeast, nuts and seeds regularly.

Exercise regularly, exercise makes the body function more efficiently and raises strength and endurance.

Add a broad spectrum of amino acid supplements to boost the benefits of your exercise program, help increase muscle mass, and improve mental function because they are precurser to important neurotransmitters to the brain.

New!! Subluxation Station

Linea Chiropractic is excited to announce that we have added one more tool that will improve our quality of care and services.  We have brought into the practice the Insight Subluxation Station.  This is a spinal care technology developed for astronauts and is now available for better chiropractic care here on Earth.  The Insight Subluxation Station is a neurospinal screening and evaluation system that uses surface electromyography (SEMG) technology originally designed to measure changes in the spinal muscles of astronauts.

Chiropractors use the Insight to help identify subluxation stationsubluxations, or misalignments of the spine by measuring muscle activity. Subluxations disturb the muscles' regular nerve function, causing an abnormal amount of electrical flow to the muscle as well as other health challenges. The Insight Subluxation Station measures the electrical flow and charts it using graphics that show the spine and specify precisely how chiropractors should adjust their patients. Insight allows for increased accuracy in diagnosis and improved treatment.

We are committed to give you the best possible care with the best possible results.  If you'd like to have an evaluation of your spine through this great system, we are now offering a complimentary first time scan.  A $65 value, so please call now to schedule your evaluation!

Summer Recipes (BBQ)

Summer is a time for outdoor barbeques and ball games, so here are some of our tips for you!

Veggie Kabobs

Marinade
1/2 c extra virgin olive oil
3 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tsp salt
1 tsp freshly-ground black pepper
1 1/2 tsp dried oregano
2 cloves mashed garlic

Veggies
4 medium red onions, quartered
2 medium green zucchini
2 medium yellow summer squash
12 cremini mushrooms, stemmed
1 red bell pepper
1/4 lb feta cheese, crumbled (optional)

kabobs

Mix marinade ingredients in a small bowl. Cut all vegetables into 1 inch pieces, place them in a 2 gallon zipper plastic bag.  Pour in marinade, seal, and turn over to coat everything.  Marinate in the refrigerator 1 to 4 hours.

When ready to cook, remove vegetables from marinade and thread onto kabob rods.  Leave a little space between vegetables for air to circulate.  Grill until all veggies are tender and golden, about 20-25 minutes.

After the kabobs are off the grill, garnish with feta cheese, if desired.

Chicken or Tofu can also be a great addition to this vegetarian

If using wooden kabob sticks soak them in water so they don't burn, and use two sticks per kabob so that they turn easily on the grill.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes

1 lb sweet potatoes
1/4 c organic butter

Preheat grill.  Clean sweet potatoes, cutting of any bad spots.  Cut into 1/2 inch slices. Place on medium hot grill and cook for about 8-10 minutes on one side.  Soften butter and spread it over slices and turn.  Continue grilling about 6-8 minutes.  Turn and spread on more  butter.  Continue grilling until  butter begins to bubble.  Keep a close eye while cooking so they don't burn!
